Learning: Bar Charts

Saw this in my local newspaper. Thought it was a pretty good dashboard info graph. We have use of two BAN’s in the left, and two bar chats on the right that have the value printed in the bar. Like the horizontal charts; fits well for reading as well as the value print. I also like the quote summarizing the graph. Aesthetically pleasing and drew me in.

I’ve just started Alberto Cairo’s “How Charts Lie” (I think that’s the name?) and he’s talking a lot about a graph’s scaffolding or what holds up the graphs. I like the bow charts on the right don’t have axis but scales are consistent. Like how there is no y axis but it’s clear what it is showing.

I recently took a dashboard and visualization course. It has really gotten me to focus in on visualizations and what makes a good image and what doesn’t. I’ve been looking for real life examples to learn from. I found this one in a Washington Post.

It‘s just a bar chart but what I love the most about it is the name on the y axis goes along with the bar. It isn’t stuck outside an arbitrarily axis. I also love the use of the value at the end of the bar. And finally, I like the use of color to highlight the focus of the story. The bold lettering and colors really captures your eye and forces you to focus in
